Our Cookbook

cookbook1

Special Features: The recipes inspired by plays are all submitted by characters from the play. Each themed recipe also has a quote from the play to enhance your culinary and educational experience. We like to think of this as edible Cliffs notes. The plays are organized by historical periods and each of our eight sections is introduced with multiple full-color photos showcasing our talent. There is also a bonus section of favorite recipes from members and Michigan Youth Theater get-togethers. In keeping with our theme, these groupings are given dramatic names, such as Curtain Raisers (Breakfast Foods) and Run-throughs (Quick Dishes). We have also included many unique themes such as: Greek dishes, wild game recipes, tea-time treats, teen favorites and campfire cuisine to name a few.

Description: From Antigone to Zoo Story, from William the Bard to Oscar Wilde, over the past ten years Michigan Youth Theater has amazed and entertained audiences with our professionally directed and rendered performances of classics--old and new. Now you can feast upon the edible version! In this cookbook you will discover all of the plays from our decade on the stage. Each main section of the cookbook is based on a play, with a selection of recipes for foods either mentioned in the play itself or associated with the play's theme or time period. Dine upon authentic cucumber sandwiches like Algernon in The Importance of Being Earnest and wash them down with Martha's delicious elderberry wine from Arsenic and Old Lace. You can learn science from the recipes from Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and relish the sinfully good food of the Faust Project. With eighteen plays represented and 450 delicious dishes to explore, you're sure to treasure this unique work of art for years to come.

Funds raised support: Proceeds from the sale of our cookbook will go back into our non-profit organization which is dedicated to helping our young adults excel in leadership, teamwork and communication skills. We believe we can help our teens act on their dreams.

Chestnut Roast
By: Ross from Macbeth

  • 2 T. butter

  • 1 lg. onion, chopped

  • 2 celery stalks, finely chopped

  • 2 lbs. chestnuts, peeled and cooked, or 3 (15-oz.) cans chestnuts

  • 2 T. parsley

  • 2 T. lemon juice

  • 1 clove garlic, crushed

  • Fresh whole-wheat bread crumbs, as needed

  • Salt to taste

  • Pepper to taste

  • 1/4 C. oil

  • Dried bread crumbs for coating

Melt the butter and saute the onion and celery over moderate heat for 10 minutes, until soft but not brown. Transfer to a large bowl. Drain the chestnuts and add to the bowl. Mix these ingredients well, mashing them as you go. Add chopped parsley, lemon juice and garlic. The mixture should be soft but firm enough to form into a roll. If necessary, add the fresh bread crumbs to achieve the right consistency. Season with salt and pepper. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Pour a little of the oil into a roasting pan and put it in the oven to heat. Form the chestnut mixture into a roll about 8 inches long, pressing it together carefully. Coat the roll well with the dried breadcrumbs. Put the chestnut roll into the roasting pan and carefully turn it so that it is coated with hot oil. Bake 45 minutes, until it is crisp on the outside, basting during cooking. Note: First Witch: "A sailor's wife had chestnuts in her lap, and munch'd, and munch'd, and munch'd. 'Give me,' quoth I." [First Witch chats with her fellow weird sisters before Macbeth stumbles across them.]
